Balonne set to show rivals clean pair of heels today

By

JEFF SCOTT

Ricky May, last season’s leading South Island reinsman, looks set to kick off the opening of the new season in the south by winning with the Balonne in the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Timaru Harness Racing Club’s meeting today.

They combined for an impressive firstup debut at Addington last month when Balonne staged an authoritative frontrunning win from the Methven stable of Ricky’s father, Terry May. Balonne, a five-year-old son of the illfated speedster, Locarno, is favourably drawn to shown his rivals a clean pair of heels again today in the 2700-metre Glenwood Takeaways Mobile Pace. ' Balonne was good enough to have Tuapeke Knight at full stretch to beat him in a heat of the Lion Brown Rising Stars Series back in their three-year-old days and the former, sidelined with a bad injury for more than a year, now looks ready to fulfil that early potential. Aquatic, a dual winner in the lower grades at last year’s New Zealand Cup meeting, is to have his first start since being sidelined with a virus last December and should be tough to beat. The John Lischner-trained entire showed his fitness for this with a mobile 2400 m win at the Ashburton trials 11 days ago in a respectable 3:6.8, sprinting in from the 800 m in 57.8 seconds. The more tightly-assessed pacers, Application and stablemate Great Provider, chased him home on that occasion. Star Kingdom is another with impressive trial form for this, having won a mobile 2600 m trial in 3:18.9 at Addington last Wednesday, and is another leading

chance. Crowley is capable of getting into the finish too, but has a wide draw to contend with, while Admiral Charles is racing soundly and has previously shown a liking for the Phar Lap Raceway. Avalon Skipper, and Miss Mischief, in spite of second-line draws, appeals most of the remainder. Jim Curtin, second-equal behind Ricky May among the top South Island drivers last term, has an excellent opportunity of getting off the mark for the new term with the promising Module’s Gift in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Dominion Breweries Pace. Module’s Gift, after getting back on both nights he raced at Addington last month, scored easily both times and the rise in class today should not worry the son of former champion, Lord Module (1:54.9). The southerner, Calcutta Sweep, a four-year-old Son Of Afella gelding in the Colin Baynes-Robin Swain stable, has compiled a tidy record and should be close up, while Anzus is drawn to show something nearer his best form and should be a definite improver since resuming at Addington last month after a long layoff. Double Bye and Tramp are others which would not surprise by figuring in the trifecta.
