CULLEN SMITH
An air accident inspector will today study the site of a fatal helicopter crash at Clevedon, south of Auckland, yesterday. The Auckland police said a Robinson R 22 helicopter on a scenic flight went dowri in a heavily wooded area of Clevedon about 3.30 p.m. killing both occupants. The victims were
Mr John Francis O’Grady, aged 35, the pilot, of Greenlane, and his passenger,
Miss Lisa Robison, aged 17, of Mount Eden.
The police said the accident would be investigated by the Ministry of Transport. An air accident inspector would visit the crash site today.
No other details were available late last evening. Yesterday’s crash was the third fatal air accident in the country in three days, claiming a total of eight lives. On Sunday two people were killed instantly after, a mid-air collision between two Tomahawk
aircraft flying in formation near Palmerston North.
They were aboard a plane which plummeted into the ground after hitting the other. Another person injured by debris from the collision died later in Wellington Hospital after the second aircraft managed to land safely at Palmerston North. On Monday evening three people aboard a Convair freight aircraft died when the plane crashed into Auckland’s Manukau Harbour just after take-off about 10 p.m.
