Work found for volunteers
In less than 12 months since its opening, the Canterbury Volunteer Centre has placed about 200 people with organisations seeking volunteer help. The centre’s chairwoman, Lady Hay, told its first annual general meeting there was considerable demand for volunteer labour, with about 100 registered agencies on the centre’s books. The centre, at 203 Gloucester Street, is staffed by 25 volunteers. Staff tried to match individuals with organisations seeking help, and feedback about the success of placements has been good. More volunteers were wanted, and the
centre wanted to boost its profile during “Volunteer Awareness Week," planned for September 25 to 29. Lady Hay said employers should be encouraged to take into account volunteer work in considering job applicants’ suitability, she said. Many women who resumed paid work after time off for childbirth started at low pay rates which did not recognise organisational skills in running a family or in volunteer work undertaken. The centre, which was started by a seeding fund from the Christchurch City Council, would be seeking funding for its first salaried officer in the coming year.
