Grieving mother pleads for bike
BARRY CLARKE
The grieving mother of a university student whose bicycle was stolen soon after he was killed in a motor accident, wants it back. The mountain bike, which has immense sentimental value, was taken from Mr Chris Smale’s Riccarton flat after he was knocked off his motor-cycle oh the Lewis Pass several weeks ago. “Whoever has taken it obviously won’t know what the bike means to us,” said Mrs Pam Smale from her Motueka home yesterday. “All his possessions are being brought back this week-end. He used the bike to go to and from
varsity. It’s something we’d like to be able to hang on to.” Mr Smale, aged 20, was returning to Christchurch from visiting his parents in Motueka when the accident occurred at the Hanmer turn-off. He was a second-year student at the University of Canterbury, studying chemical engineering. The blue mountain bike was padlocked at the back of ,37 Brockworth Place. Mrs Smale said that if the culprit had a conscience they could return it to the address. No questions would be asked. “We just want it back, that’s all.” Mr Smale Was a prominent sportsman in Motueka.
