Robbery of Swedes a hoax
PA Auckland The Auckland police say the reported knife-point robbery of two Swedish tourists in downturn. Auckland late on Monday evening was a hoax. The two men told the police they had been confronted by three Maoris or Polynesians, two of whom were armed with knives, as they walked along Beach Road just after 11 p.m. Fearing for their safety, the pair said they dropped their heavy packs with their cash and all their belongings, and ran. When they returned a few minutes
later the packs had disappeared. They later told the police the packs contained $4600 in cash as well as camera gear, jewellery and personal belongings. But a police spokesman, SeniorSergeant Graeme Bell, said they are now satisfied it was a false complaint. He said the pair may be charged with making a false complaint. At least one Auckland radio station began accepting donations for the two to cover the money said to have been in their packs.
