Water polo loss PA Auckland New Zealand’s junior men’s water polo team went down, 710, to the University of Southern California Trojans in the final of the Orange County aquatic invitational meet in Los Angeles at the week-end. However, the team manager, Chris Hayward, yesterday attributed the defeat after the Kiwis led 7-4 at half-time to a sudden change in refereeing style during the game. “We were ahead at half-time when the refereeing style changed and we received 11 ejections from the pool to Trojans’ one, ruining our chances,” said Mr Hayward. "A complaint has been made about the refereeing — not by us — and is to go to a judicial committee tomorrow.” Showjumper second PA Wellington A leading New Zealand showjumper, Leanne Chambers, overcame bad conditions to finish second in the Fuji Women’s showjumping championships in Tokyo on Sunday. Chambers was mounted on Untold Story, a horse lent to her by a Japanese competitor. Arsenal wins match NZPA-Reuter London Arsenal, who pipped Liverpool for the English first-division title in May, beat its rivals, 1-0, on Sunday to win a four-team international soccer tournament. The defender, Steve Bould, scored with a header in the thirteenth minute and that proved enough for Arsenal, who defeated Liverpool, 2-0, in the final game of last season to capture the league title for the first time since 1971. Dynamo Kiev, beaten 2-0 by Liverpool on Saturday, took third place with a 1-0 win over Porto, thanks to a fifty-sixth minute goal by Kontshelskls. Porto was beaten, 1-0, by Arsenal on Saturday. Rain ruins cricket NZPA London Persistent rain washed out any chance of a result on the second and final day of the New Zealand Youth cricket team’s match against Essex young cricketers at Chelmsford yesterday. Only about three hours play were possible and New Zealand declared at 201 for seven in reply to Essex’s first innings of 190. At stumps Essex was 59 for two in its second innings. The manager, John Howell, believes the tourists are starting to show glimpses of the form expected of them.
