Beau Zam, Almaarad equal in Cup weights
NZPA-AAP Sydney Beau Zam, Australia’s champion racehorse of last season, has been given equal top weight of 59kg in both the sAustl.Bs million Melbourne Cup and the sAustl million Caulfield Cup. The Bart Cummingstrained entire shares the honour with the imported galloper, Almaarad, which is being prepared for the Cups by Colin Hayes. But due to a freak accident in a trial at Kembla Grange recently, Beau Zam is unlikely to race again. The rising five-year-old strained his off hind hock. Talaq. The rising seven-year-old entire was brought to Australia by an English trainer, John Dunlop, for the Tancred International Stakes at Rosehill last autumn but broke down and was scratched from the race. Beau Zam also missed the Tancred International because of a pricked hoof.
Almaarad has been transferred to Hayes, who also trained At Talaq for a Cups preparation. The Caulfield Cup will be run on Saturday, October 21, while the Melbourne Cup is run on Tuesday, November 7. Jim Bowler, the Victoria Racing Club’s handicapper, allotted Research 52.5 kg for the Melbourne Cup — the equivalent to the eight stone four pounds carried to victory by Light Fingers in 1965.
Research, winner of the V.R.C. champion racehorse award for the 198889 season, earned her weight with a string of victories in Melbourne and Sydney. The rising four-year-old mare, which is prepared by Clarrie Conners at Warwick Farm in Sydney, became the first filly to complete the Australian Jockey Club’s Derby-Oaks double in the autumn.

The veteran Melbourne doubles bookmaker, Syd Lyons, has Research at 71 for the Melbourne Cup. Lyons has the Lee Freedman-trained Super Impose a 9-1 favourite for the Caulfield Cup. Super Impose is weighted on 56kg in both Cups.
Vo Rogue, which defeated Super Impose in the Australian Cup over 2000 m at Flemington during the autumn, is the third highest weighted horse in the Caulfield Cup with 58.5 kg. Vo Rogue was not nominated for the Melbourne Cup.
