TABLE TENNIS
Daliington had an upset 6-5 win over second-placed Linwood in the twelfth round of the Canterbury Table Tennis Assocition’s winter premier grade inter-club competition. The key to Dallington’s success was its winning both the doubles matches. In the match of the night, Michael Hamel (Daliington) went down to Henry Redmond, 20-22, in the third game. Redmond had to struggle to beat Denis Kalin,
who is returning to form after an illness. The competition leader, Avonside 1, beat third-placed Avonside 2, 6-5. Again doubles played a big part in the top team’s victory. Matu Johnston had an upset win over Les Stewart, who did not let that worry him, for he turned around and beat Canterbury representative, Lyndon White, in his next match. The bottom-placed Riccarton had some consolation in beating Landsdowne, which missed the services of Peter'de Boer. Results:— Avonside I 6, Avonside 2 5 D.
