Minsons closes doors
By
RICHARD CRESSWELL
Minsons, Ltd, the well-known giftware store in Colombo Street, closed its doors for the last time last evening. The general manager, Mr Mark Ballantyne, said the company was taking the remaining six staff out to dinner as a parting gesture. Higher inner-city rents have been blamed for the closing of one of the oldest family-controlled businesses in Christchurch. The business was founded in 1857 and
renamed Minson and Company in 1892. The site’s owner, Mr lan McAulay, of Rangiora, said there had been one or two tenants interested in the site, including Australian businesses. "There is nothing positive yet,” he said. Mr McAulay, who bought the site last year, said most of the interest was coming from financial institutions and retail businesses. Good inner-city retail sites were still attracting interest especially from larger retailers, he said.
