Whale watching causes concern

The Department of Conservation is worried that the growing popularity of whale-watching off the Kaikoura coast could eventually drive the whales away unless the number of operators is controlled. A senior conservation officer with the department, Mr Andrew Baxter, said the department believed a limit needed to be placed on the number of boats operating over the next two or three years until the effect on marine mammals had been evaluated. Three operators run trips for tourists to view the whales and they are required to have a permit under the Marine Mammals Protection Act.
