Caygill defends finance record

Political reporter The Government will go to the polls next year with a proven record of responsible economic management, the Minister of Finance, Mr Caygill, said yesterday. In a post-Budget speech in Auckland, he said people could compare the Labour Government against the last National Government. “That’s the best comparison that they’ll be able to make because the Opposition has yet to produce a clear and coherent statement of its current position,” he said. The Government had been responsible in bringing the country close to living within its means, cutting public debt, reviewing its spending, and not giving in to political pressure. The Government had also been “evenhanded” in its treatment of people. Mr Caygill said the Government did not have a secret crock of money from which it could dispense favours — a reference to the spending restraint in the Budget “In the end there is only one source of money, and that is the taxpayer,” he said.
