‘Special role for schools’ in 1990

Schools throughout the country are being encouraged to plan studies on New Zealand cultures and heritage for 1990. The 1990 Commission’s chief executive, Mr Don Hutchings, says the year’s emphasis on planning and building for the future creates a special role for children and school communities. Nearly 400 schools throughout the country have appointed teacher and student 1990 co-ordi-nators. School projects planned for the year include mini Commonwealth Games, cultural productions, air and craft projects, historical costume days, special inter-school events, marae visits, cultural exchanges, native tree plantings and speech contests. The commission is distributing the first part of a special educational resource kit to all schools this week. The kit, entitled “Belong Here, Toi Taketake” aims to help schools develop curriculum resources for cultures and heritage studies, and to encourage the active participation of schools in projects for 1990.
