Derrydonnell returns, chance for Riccarton
The Christchurch-owned jumper, Derrydonnell, returned from Australia this week and is an outside chance to run in the Grand National carnival at Riccarton. Derrydonnell’s trainer, Brian Kennedy, is examining his options at the moment but the horse has recovered from the injury which brought about his late withdrawal from the Grand National Steeplechase at Flemington on July 6 after he went amiss with back trouble in his lead-up gallops. Derrydonnell had won the race the previous year and had had a special
preparation for the race this time. The Grand National was won by Bar the Shouting. Derrydonnell had also been on the short list for an invitation to the rich Colonial Cup Steeplechase, run each year in the United States, but his bypassing of the Melbourne race could have lengthened the odds against that trip. Noble Heritage, which also ran in the Grand National at Flemington, is down to run in the Hiskyns Steeplechase today, the final jumping feature of the Victorian winter.
