Baby Zach returns home after surgery

By

DEBORAH McPHERSON

Baby Zach, the Christchurch baby rushed to. Melbourne for life-saving surgery three weeks ago, arrived home on Wednesday. A spokesman for the Royal Children’s Hopsital, Mr Don Kinsey, said yesterday that Zach and his parents had left the same day they were told their son was well enough to leave hospital. Zach would need minor surgery in Christchurch, but Mr Kinsey said he was not free to say what. Zach’s parents had continued to request confidentiality for themselves and their child, because they had signed a contract to tell their story to an international magazine, said Mr Kinsey. The contract prevented them from speaking to other news media about the surgery until after the magazine article was published. Zach, born six weeks premature at Christchurch Women’s Hospital on July 6, suffered from a rare bladder and bowel condition called cloacal extrophy. The bowel and the bladder were both in several pieces outside the abdomen. The condition occurs in only one in 250,000 babies.
