United qualifies
Christchurch United scored a goal three minutes before the end of extra time to beat the title-holder, Western, 2-1, and join Rangers and University in the semi-finals of the English Cup soccer competition. The other semi-finalist will be the winner of the Cashmere versus Technical fixture on Tuesday evening. Mike Boomer opened the scoring for United early in the second half against Western at English Park on Wednesday evening,' but Wayne Higgs got the equaliser after 25min when he pounced on a long throwin and scored from close range. The score stayed at 1-1 to full-time and it looked set to remain that alter the 30min of extra time until Kelly Tonkins latched on to a long through pass and placed his shot into the net. In the curtain-raiser, a “Press” youth competition match, the Canterbury youth selection beat Linwood High School, 2-1. Ricky Carswell scored for the Canterbury team in the first half and Dave Taylor levelled for Linwood. But John Campbell, who had earlier missed a penalty, gave Canterbury a 2-1 half-time lead and Colin Evans put the issue beyond doubt with Canterbury’s third goal in the second half. Canterbury is unbeaten in the competition and its only blemish was its draw against St Thomas of Canterbury College.
