Full Spring programme for Christchurch
Spring is on its way — and Christchurch will be dressed for the occasion. Christchurch — the garden city of the South Pacific — is gearing itself up for the warmer weather and the longer days in a way now acknowledged as “the way to go!” The annual Spring Festival “Spring’s here” begins on Sepember 1 with a lunchtime concert in Cathedral Square, but work* on the programme starts well before that. In fact, for the first recipient of the goodwill of Spring; preparation will have began quite some time ago! The first baby bom after midnight at Christchurch Women's Hospital on August 31 will receive the traditional “Spring’s here” first baby of -spring prize package which includes great things for small people, as well as a special “make life easier” presentation for the parents. “Spring’s here” runs until early October and features as the principal venue the Daffodil Lawn of the Botanic Gardens. Even false starts to Spring, which cause cherry blossom to appear in May cannot deter the daffodils which bloom — all 40,000 plus of them — from late August until early. October. Concerts and .other activities will regularly occur in this venue on: Tuesdays and Sundays throughout this time and a highlight will be the James Taylor Theme.: Day .. featuring Graham = Wardrop, Liz Braggihs and/ friends on Sunday^September 17 from midday until 3 p.m. Watch “The Press” and listen to yourradiofor further details. church is perhaps the highlight of . the year and 1989 will be no exception. The Inner City Promotions section of the Christchurch City Council — coordinators of all that is festive for the City — will put out a programme during October to highlight major events for this week of weeks and it is sure to include The Show Weekend Fiesta on Saturday 11 November in Cathedral Square. This event matches The Christmas Party and New Year’s Eve as a major “Heart of the City” event beginning at 6 p.m. with family fun and festival entertainment fireworks at 9 p.m. and music and dancing until the wee small hours.
Cathedral Square — “the Heart of the City” — is alive with excitement and vitality, and the weekly “market day” on Fridays provides .colour and a cosmopolitan-atmo-sphere to - this ; unique venue. As with; the “Spring here” festival, Inner City Promotions are happy to receive your ideas and contributions, to include your event in the festival programme, or to help you gain the most from the Christchurch City Council’s promotional progrmme.
Planning is already well underway for the seventh "Summer Times” festival beginning on December Ist, 1989. The sixth festival saw audiences top 250,000 for the 43 concerts and major outdoor events, and this year’s festival already looks to be: brighter, bigger, and the best yet. Many of the favourite events will be retained for the 1989-90 “Summer Times” festival but you can expect lots of changes, new aproaches,
extraordinary fun, and top entertainment. Prime display space is now available in the Civic Offices: Local Government amalgamation will place a unique focus on the Civic Offices in Tuam Street and this increased emphasis could enable you to gain an increased audience and a higher profile for the activities of your organisation if you decide to utilise the Council’s display windows. The large windows — splendid display areas — are available for hire, and assistance can be made available to you in mounting your promotional display. Its a great opportunity.
