Win puts sale on road to success

The win of two-year-old Southern Beau at the Waipa meeting recently was a further boost to the likely success of the 22nd South Island sale to be held at the Showgrounds on August 11.

Southern Beau was bought at last year’s sale by the trainer, Bruce Priscott, and a half brother by Tawfiq is offered by his Waimate breeder this year.

Southern Beau is from a War Hawk mare which did not race, but which is a sister to the smart Ave Regina and so is closely related to Supremity. Southern Beau’s granddam is Regina Caeli, a Sovereign Edition mare which won the Geraldine Stakes (listed). Regina Caeli has a two-year-old as a late entry into the sale.

The highlight of this year’s sale is the increased participation by the largest stud in the

South Island, White Robe Lodge, of Mosgiel, and its associates.

White Robe has 23 lots entered including a sister to the grand racehorse and successful sire Alibhai. Five others by Noble Bijou are offered and the stud is also producing a selection from its younger stallions, Tawfiq and Cautious Style which has made an impact from his first crop this season.

Hector Anderton junior, a brother of White Robe’s operator, Brian, has 21 horses entered, all but three bred to White Robe stallions. These include six Noble Bijou youngsters including fillies from Clarendon Princess, Copernicus, Princess Orchid, Sassaby, Scarlet Ribbon and Scintillate.

Allegra Park, the successful Waikato Stud, returns to the sale. Among its offering is a Straight Strike colt from Rehearsal

and so closely related to Come Racing.

Other northern studs represented include Cambridge Stud, the sponsor of the Two Thousand Guineas at Riccarton, which offers a Danzatore filly; Seattle Lodge of Pahiatua, which has a number of broodmares catalogued; Stafford Park in Cambridge, which offers a colt by the promising young sire, Sackford, which is a half brother to Kahu, and a Pompeii Court colt from a Wandering Eyes mare, which is a half sister to Hasty Tui. There is a host of southern vendors with plenty of offerings by Savant, sire of the St Leger winner, Saveur, this season, Cocky Golfer, Palatable State of Kings and most other southern based stallions with racing stock. Two well established Canterbury breeding operations, Beltana Stud of Parnassus and Te

Mania Bloodstock of the same area have interesting lots carded.

Te Mania offers a half sister to Spot of Gold by the impeccably credentialled young sire, Roman Empire, and a Sepulveda filly from Swift Row.

Beltana offers a half sister to the brilliant youngster, Myginti by Otehi Bay and a handsome colt by Nassipour, from Ride the River.

The Wrightsons representative of thoroughbred interests in the South Island, Rob Fielder, has recently returned from a promotional tour for the sales in Australia and was encouraged with the results.

“There seems as much or more interest than in previous years. Noble Bijou is still a popular sire over there and having so many by him in the sale is a big help,” he said.

The South Island sale promotes itself as an ideal place for the budget buyer who can get a horse ready to go into immediate training.

The addition of choice lots from White Robe, which may otherwise have gone to northern sales is a big boost and results should continue to be encouraging.
