Psychiatric health unit for Chch

Christchurch will get a pur-pose-built medium security, psychiatric unit as a result of the Budget. The unit, one of seven to be built throughout New Zealand in the next three years, will be part of a comprehensive integrated forensic service established by the Government as a result of the Mason report into psychiatric services. The Government has allocated $3.6 million this year to provide staffing for the units which will care for the mentally ill who come into conflict with the law. The Minister of Health, Ms Clark, said yesterday that the Government would provide $24,256 million over the next three years to meet the loan servicing costs involved in the construction of the units, the actual cost of staffing the units, and the establishment of regional forensic psychiatry teams. The units would be staffed by teams of around 14 people in each region.
