Man jailed for threatening to slit man’s throat

A man who threatened to "slit” another man if he did not give him money was sent to prison for 12 months by Judge Hay in the District Court yesterday. The Judge told Perry Sanders, aged 22, unemployed, that although the amount he obtained — $lO — was not large, the offence was grave. “I have no doubt it was a fearful experience for the complainant,” said Judge Hay. Sanders made the threat after asking the complainant for a ride. Fearful for his safety the complainant handed over $lO. The offence took place at 10.15 p.m. on July 3. Counsel, Mrs Angela Grant, said her client’s offending was largely due to his drug problem, and his psychiatric condition. 12 MONTHS PRISON Jason Karl Blackler,

aged 19, unemployed, was sentenced to 12 months jail. He was appearing for sentence after admitting charges of unlawfully taking vehicles, burglary, theft, and driving while disqualified. The offences took place between May 12 and June 5. Blackler (Mr Tim Fournier), had an extremely long list of previous offending and while he was at liberty public property was not safe, said the Judge. The defendant was also disqualified from holding, or obtaining, a driver’s licence for 12 months. SIX MONTHS PRISON Robert John Hodges was imprisoned for six months on charges of assaulting two traffic officers — one of whom was kicked in the groin. Assaulting traffic officers was very serious, said Judge Hay. They had

a difficult and thankless job to perform without being assaulted. It was the job of the courts to give law enforcement officers protection against such behaviour, he said. Hodges, aged 29 (Mrs M. Lai), punched one officer, without provocation, after a car was stopped at 1.30 a.m. on October 9, last year, in Bealey Avenue for exceeding the speed limit. Hodges, a passenger in the car, refused to give his name and address, and became abusive. After punching the officer a violent struggle ensued and Hodges was handcuffed. It was while handcuffed, and at the Central Police Station, that he kicked another officer in the groin. Hodges was also appearing for sentence for assaulting his wife, a breach of periodic detention, and a breach of bail.
