Aust, off highs at close

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed higher yesterday, though sustained profittaking in the afternoon session took it off its high for the day. The all ordinaries closed 10.5 points higher at 1628.2, after earlier reaching 1638.0. "The market was overbought in the morning session following Wall Street’s 30point gain and that led to profit-taking later on,” a senior Ord Minnett dealer said. “But at the end of the day, one would have to say it still performed impressively.” The all industrials index was 17.9 points higher at 2609.0, the all resources up 5.0 at 886.3 and the gold marker 7.3 up to 1601.2.
