Hospital chapel
Sir, —Thank you for publishing my letter regarding the Nurses’ Memorial Chapel. I am writing this letter from notes given me by Miss M. Shepherd, of Churchill Courts. Where have the Friends of the Nurses’ Memorial Chapel been these past years? Five years ago it was decided that the chapel was not a historic building. Why the present change of mind to upgrade it from a C to B rating? Miss Shepherd, like myself, trained in the 1923-27 period. She has been associated with the
Christchurch School of Nursing for many years raising funds to maintain and care for the chapel. More than $40,000 has been given to the Area Health Board to restore the inner parts when the chapel is centrally sited in the new hospital complex. A suggestion has been made that the chapel, retained as at present, could become an attraction for tourists, etc. Miss Shepherd feels strongly that this would be the last thing those whose memory the chapel was built would wish; likewise those in who inspired the idea.—Yours, etc?, E. J. CARTER. July 25,1989.
