Rebel leader arrested
NZPA-AFP Manila One of The Philippines’ best-known Communist leaders and a former rebel negotiator during failed peace talks with the Government was arrested yesterday, a general said. Major General Ramon Montano, chief of the Philippine Constabulary, said Saturnino Ocampo, a former journalist, was arrested in front of a house in suburban Makati along with Carolina Malay, his common-law wife. Ocampo and Malay served as representatives of the rebel National Democratic Front during peace talks with the Government, which collapsed in January, 1987. The capture of the couple came five days after Ocampo issued a press statement reiterating the N.D.F.’s offer of a unilateral ceasefire If President Corazon Aquino promised to remove United States military base. ?
