Canterbury shooters excel

Canterbury’s strong start in its netball clash with Tasmania earned it a 49-34 win at the Hagley courts last evening. Canterbury was missing its New Zealand players, April leremia, Annette Heffernan and Sharon Burridge — who are competing overseas — but the remaining squad members displayed plenty of promise in freezing weather conditions. Leigh Gibbs, the Canterbury coach, experimented with her shooting lineup as Lee McKenzie started the match at goal attack but was later moved to goal shoot. Liz Kazmierc-

zak, the 16-year-old from the Hearts club, made an impressive start at goal attack but was taken off at half-time as Anna Pilbrow moved into goal shoot. Pilbrow and McKenzie switched at the four-quarter mark. Mrs Gibbs was eager to “get more movement in the circle and to get a different perspective of the team with different combinations.” The feisty Canterbury defence made the most of any hesitancy in the Tasmanian attacking line. “Their strength is in their height,” said Shirley

Hunt, the Tasmanian coach. “And their accuracy under the goal was great. But they are very aerial players and any passes we put up they intercepted. But that was quite good because it made us come to the ball.” Canterbury made a decisive start arid led 13-6 at the end of the first quarter and 25-14 at half-time. Tasmania then began to link up its attack line with more authority and swung the ball wide with dexterity. Sandra MacPherson, the Canterbury goal defence and Larissa Glubb,

its goalkeep, both had encouraging games. Chris Palmer and Margaret Bray, attacking players, fed their shooters confidently. Tasmania won the third quarter 14-10 and held Canterbury to a 10-10 scoreline in the final 15 minutes, but the early lead was significant. Illawarra, a junior team from Australia, had a hectic schedule yesterday as it played three Canterbury lineups. It beat Canterbury under 15, 57-39, Canterbury under 16, 3524 and Canterbury under 18, 15-12, in a shortened game in the evening.
