Prescription charges might come down after Budget legislation which allows the Health Department to directly import pharmaceuticals. The Minister of Health, Ms Clark, said the department had limited influence over pharmaceutical prices. An estimated 80 per cent of prescription medicines were imported, but the department often had either to accept the manufacturer’s price or impose a part-charge if that price was seen as unreasonable, Ms Clark said. “The ability to directly import pharmaceuticals could mean a considerable reduction in the cost of prescription subsidies to the taxpayer."
