Action on tax arrears

By

PATTRICK SMELLIE

The tax department is getting heavy with people who know they owe tax and have not paid up. The Minister of Finance, Mr Caygill, announced in last evening’s Budget that a IM-member team has been established by the Inland Revenue Department to chase up taxpayers who are in arrears. Outside debt collection agents will be used in the crackdown, which seeks to

gather $5O million of the $735 million tax in arrears. The new unit started this week. The $735 million outstanding was about 3.8 per cent of all tax paid last year. “Delays in receiving revenue impose extra costs on the Government, which result in taxes over all being higher than they need to be,” said Mr Caygill. “That is not fair, especially for those taxpayers who meet their obligations on time,” said Mr Caygill.
