Caledonian Count set to end season with win

Auckland correspondent

The capable Mike Stor-mont-trained pacer, Caledonian Count, looks well placed to end this season on a winning note at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting at Alexandra Park tonight.

Caledonian Count has always shown talent and a number of offers have been turned down for the rising five-year-old.

He has drawn well at No. 4 and a solid form background should make him the likely favourite. Caledonian Count will not have it all his own way though with the likes of recent winers Surmoson and Lotliker plus Olivant and Smooth Lord to test him.

Olivant appeared to be unlucky in his last start after his impressive victory the time before at Alexandra Park. He wil be driven by Maurice McKendry, tonight, which should prove a big help.

The Lion Red Graduation final, the second leg of the T.A.B. double, has last Friday night’s Alexandra Park winners, Wandering Eyes and Vindicate, clashing. Wandering Eyes has been a model of consistency in three starts and looks a good prospect again to repeat his effort tonight. On a very moderate night’s racing the highlight may well come from the C2 pacers’ event, which sees the fine three-year-olds Letterkenny Lad and Nero Antico, pitted against each other. John Langdon has high regard for the promising Letterkenny Lad and he may halt Nero Antico’s unbeaten sequence tonight.

But Nero Antico has looked extremely smart and the connections of the gelding turned down a substantial offer for the horse last week.
