Wairio Moments may steal show tomorrow
By
DAVID McCARTHY
The Oamaru Cup and the Glenavy Handicap are the open class, middle distance and sprint events at the Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting tomorrow but the horse with most support on the day may be a previously unraced maiden two-year-old all the way from Gore.
Wairio Moments, trained by Ted Winsloe, has 250 owners so that even though drawn wide in the Fulton Hogan Handicap she is bound to be warmly supported. The filly is raced on lease from Patrick Hogan’s Cambridge Stud by members of the Wairio Jockey Club. In a typically innovative move, Wairio have opened ownership for racing purposes in the filly to all club members with an immediate response. A half-sister to Dark Moments, Wairio Moments is something of an unknown quantity but is bound to return to a rousing reception should she win. The resumption of two class gallopers trained by Mickey Didham, Native Era and Noble Pal is a highlight of the programme too with the pair lining up in the Glenavy Handicap.
Native Era is bound for the Winter Cup, all going well, while Noble Pal is aimed more at features later in the
spring. Both should be dangerous fresh though Free Call and Art Banquet will appreciate footing which may be on the easy side of soft and Palatable Prince, Kish Shu, which drops 5.5 kilograms, and Diamond Annie are among those which could threaten. Native Era may possibly show best of the Didham pair. The Oamaru Cup is an especially open race and the outcome could depend on whether All Counted has come through his Wellington campaign still fresh enough to make an impact here. He should certainly appreciate the better footing. Seve is always respected but Noble Lyric, now he has found form again, Walk Up, which must be worth another chance in spite of a slightly disappointing effort at Timaru, and Nearco Note will have their supporters. There will be no surprise either if one of the lightweights does not bring about an upset, Leveldeen, Rakau Tender and See Jimmy are all capable on their best day of testing this field at the weights.
