Solid track record behind Frenchman

The performance of Jean Alesi in finishing fourth in his debut Formula One race at the recent French Grand Prix was creditable indeed, particularly because at one stage he had run as high as second position. The Frenchman, aged 24, has the credentials to justify the faith placed in him by the British team boss, Ken Tyrrell. Alesi, of Sicilian parentage, began his motorsport career in 1981 driving karts, after which he progressed to Renault Five and Formula Renault

racing. By 1986 he was contesting Formula Three in the French championship, and the following season he clinched the title for the crack ORECA team. Last season, Alesi progressed to Formula 3000 with ORECA, and this season was impressive with the Eddie Jordan team before contractual difficulties between Tyrrell’s incumbent driver, Michele Aboreto, backed by Marlboro, and Tyrrell’s new part sponsor, Camel, led to the call for Alesi.
