Lions to plant native trees

Native trees and shrubs will be planted on the Port Hills on Saturday.

Twenty-five members of the South Christchurch Lions Club will plant 300 native trees and shrubs on the slopes below Sugar Loaf.

The Christchurch City Council is providing the land as part of its longterm plan to re-establish native vegetation on the Port Hills.

The Ministry of Forestry’s Research Institute nursery in Rangiora is giving half the plants. The rest will come from the

council’s nursery. This year’s, planting site is on the downhill side of the Summit Road, just below Sugar Loaf and overlooking Victoria Park. Old pine trees growing there, and shading the road have been felled so native vegetation can be restored. The South Christchurch Lions club has had a voluntary partnership with the city council in working on the Port Hills for 22 years. It plants trees, clears earlier plantings from weed and grass, and makes bench seats for walkways.
