Three in front for Cabinet positions

By

OLIVER RIDDELL in Wellington

A clear message has been given by the Government on who are front-runners for the two Cabinet positions to be voted on by the Labour caucus next week. Three of Labour’s rising stars were given the most prominent places in the general debate in Parliament yesterday afternoon. Speaking in alphabetical order they were: The Under-Secretary for the Environment, Mr Peter Dunne (Ohariu), the Undersecretary for Social Welfare, Mrs Annette King (Horewhenua), and the chairman of Parliament’s Government Administration Select Committee, Mr Clive Matthewson (Dunedin West). There is a strong wish in the caucus to vote in some new and younger blood to the Cabinet from the members of Parliament who were elected to Parliament in 1984. The three speakers are regarded by their colleagues as those of the 1984 intake best equipped to achieve Cabinet rank.
