Employment service

Sir,—More Government propaganda at the taxpayers’ expense. In today’s “Press” is another full-page advertisement by the N.Z. Employment Service of the Department of Labour. Some folk might think the main reason the Government is spending SI.4M of their money in advertising the service is to show how concerned it is about unemployment. Apart from providing employment for the 757 on the staff of the N.Z.E.S., it is doubtful if this S36M service has actually created any significant number of new jobs. The average cost for each placement the service makes is about $2600, which is probably about double the usual fee of some private consultants. The N.Z.E.S. is meant to find work for unskilled and semiskilled people, but today’s advertisement clearly offers a free service for any employers — including finding experienced staff for lawyers, insurance companies, and finance companies.— Yours, etc., S. G. FITCHETT. July 24, 1989.
