Queen Mary Hospital

Sir,—As a recovering alcoholic and a Presbyterian pastor for 28 years, I was deeply saddened to read that the Canterbury Area Health Board would even consider closing Queen Mary Hospital. As part of my doctoral studies in alcoholism I spent some time during February at the Pasadena Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency. This is one of 200 such rehabilitation centres in the United States. When I described to the staff the kind of treatment offered at Hanmer Springs they were green with envy. The commitment to professional excellence and personal compassion by Dr Crawford and his dedicated staff are a credit to New Zealand. After comparing the treatment I received as a patient at Queen Mary with what I studied overseas, I now know why our hospital is called the “Rolls-Royce” of rehabilitation programmes in the southern hemisphere. It saved my life and marriage, restored my family, and gave me a reason for living to serve others. Its closing would be a social tragedy for our nation. — Yours, etc., (Rew) JOHN R. BRINSLEY. July 24,1989.
