Dog saves soldiers
NZPA Belfast A labrador sniffer dog saved four soldiers from an I.R.A. bomb when he wagged his tail seconds before the 68kg device exploded, the Army disclosed. As the soldiers dived for cover the black dog, Jason, was blown into the air by the blast, heard 32km away.
Two of the soldiers suffered minor injuries and six-year-old Jason was left staggering with concussion.
The dog was hailed as a hero by the Army. A spokesman said, “His chest is swelling with pride. The soldiers would almost certainly have died, or been seriously injured, but for Jason.”
Jason smelled the explosives, hidden in a dustbin, as his handler and three other soldiers patrolled near the River Foyle in Londonderry.
