Appeal response delights society
After only a month of its fund-raising mail drop, the Canterbury-Westland Division of the Cancer Society has received nearly half of its target of $78,000. To date, the society has received $38,000 from the people of Canterbury, the West Coast and lower Marlborough. A month ago, 180,000 households and private boxes from the Waitaki River to Kaikoura, and Haast to Karamea received donation envelopes. The division’s chief executive, Mr Frank Lowry, said he was delighted by the response but was aware of the need
* to keep the momentum going. “We are still committed this year to supporting a radiographer at the oncology department at Christchurch Hospital, as we do not want to see a backlog in patients waiting to receive cancer treatment once they have been diagnosed,” he said. The society also continues to offer residential care at Davidson House in Christchurch for patients coming from out of town for cancer treatment. The society, which has provided half the salaries of two extra radiographers, does not receive any direct Government funding.
