Guyanan cricketer signed

By

BOB SCHUMACHER

The East ChristchurchShirley Cricket Club will be hoping that its latest cricket acquisition, Chris Lewis, can deliver some of the aces of his tennis namesake in the 1989-90 first grade club cricket competition. Born in Guyana, Lewis, aged 21, is considered one of the most promising allrounders in English cricket and his dual talents stood England in good stead at the World Cup junior competition in Australia early last year. Lewis, rated the fastest bowler at the tournament,

took 16 wickets at low cost and was one of only three English batsmen to achieve an average over 20.

The respected English cricket commentator, Christopher MartinJenkins, said of Lewis: “He has genuine pace as a bowler and a real ability as a batsman and his future looks bright if he can keep his feet on the ground.” Lewis had taken 29 wickets for Leicestershire at an average of 20 up to the end of May before a head injury forced him to forgo bowling. However, he has been retained in

the county’s top one-day team as a batsman.

Eight wickets against Nottinghamshire represented Lewis’s best return in a first-class match and 60 has been his highest score. In a one-day game against Yorkshire he claimed three wickets for nine runs off eight overs. Lewis will replace the Northamptonshire professional, Mark Robinson, at East-Shirley. Robinson, a fast-medium paced swing bowler, spent two seasons with the club and represented Canterbury last summer.

The East-Shirley president, Roger Parlane, said

yesterday that Lewis would be with the club all season and would not be released for other playing purposes. He will coach at the club and at schools in the area.

East-Shirley has also signed the tall rightarmed medium-paced Halswell bowler, Michael Owens. Owens took 47 wickets for his Christchurch Suburban club’s senior team last season and he played for the Suburban representative team. He was named as one of the Suburban Association’s two “most promising cricketers” of last season.
