Research Australian champion

NZPA-AAP Melbourne The outstanding Sydney filly, Research, has been named Australia’s champion racehorse by the Victoria Racing Club. The award is judged by the secretaries of the principal thoroughbred racing clubs in each state, those of the Victoria Amateur Turf Club and Moonnee Valley Racing Club and the V.R.C. manager. Research polled 35 points to win from the New Zealand champion (Our) Poetic Prince on 26.5 points. Vo Rogue received 18 points. King’s High polled one point and Empire Rose half a point. The two-year-old Courtza, winner of the Blue Diamond and Golden Slipper Stakes double, failed to poll, as did Beau Zam.

Research, by Imperial Prince from Boucher mare Outing, is trained by Clarrie Conners at Warwick Farm and earned her award after an exciting spring campaign in Melbourne and autumn triumphs in Sydney.

She won the Group One V.R.C. Oaks (2500 m in the spring and in the autumn became the only horse to win the Group One A.J.C. Oaks (2400 m and Group One A.J.C. Derby (2400 m The races were just four days apart. The original painting will hang in the members dining room at Flemington and framed prints will be presented to the owners.
