Aust, shares rise sharply
NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed sharply higher as strong buying in leading stocks followed the June quarter Consumer Price Index rise of 2.4%. “The CPI figure was right in the slot and combined with strohg optionsrelated and September share price index futures contract trading to lift the market,” a dealer said.
The all ordinaries closed 11.3 points higher at 1617.7.
The all industrials index rose 16.0 points to 2591.1, the all resources 7.5 to 881.3, and the gold marker 12.2 to 1593.9.
National turnover saw 112.93 M shares worth sAust22B.4BM change hands.
Rises led falls about five to four.
Lend Lease and Howard Smith led the rises,
each up 20 cents at 1120 and 520 respectively. BTR Nylex gained 18 to 544, BHP 14 to 972 and News Corp 10 to 1625. OPSM Industries gained 10 to 205 as James Capel crossed 7.05 M shares at 210 c a share.
