Ministers’ trips cost nearly $3M

PA Wellington Overseas trips by Cabinet Ministers and Undersecretaries have cost taxpayers almost $3 million since the 1987 election, according to figures released by the Opposition yesterday. The biggest spender was the Minister of External Relations and Trade, Mr Moore, whose 19 overseas trips have cost $441,373. The single most expensive trip was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Marshall, to Britain, Europe and Greece and cost $92,477. Mr Marshall has spent $419,011 in total, on 16 trips.

The Minister of Finance, Mr Caygill, travelled the least, taking just two trips to Australia, together costing $15,817. The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, has had six trips, costing $155,245. His most expensive trip, perhaps electorally as well as financially, was the $65,309 trip to the United States and .

The Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Palmer, has had 10 trips costing $232,623, the Minister of Transport, Mr Jeffries, nine at $100,632, the former Minis-

ter for State-owned Enterprises, Mr Prebble, eight at $75,313, the Minister for Stateowned Enterprises, Mr Rodger, eight at $139,866, the Minister of Disarmament, Ms Wilde, seven at $68,395, the Minister of Defence, Mr Tizard, seven at $60,308, and the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Moyle, six at $139,017. Five trips each have been made by the Minister of Tourism, Mr Hunt, the Minister of Women’s Affairs, Mrs Shields, the Minister of Police, Mr Tapsell, the Minister of Employment, Mr Goff, the Minister of Commerce, Mr Butcher, and the former Minister of Finance, Mr Douglas. The Minister of Health, Ms Clark, has made four overseas visits costing $44,122, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Dr Bassett, four at $70,001, the Minister for the Environment, Mr Woollston, four at $74,845, the Minister of Maori Affairs, Mr Wetere, three at $23,619, and the former Minister of Revenue, Mr de Cleene, two .costing $28,039. The* cheapest scheduled “trip” on the list was a cancelled visit to Australia by Mr Wooilaston. It still cost $44.
