Golfers rewarded If Terry Cochrane (Auckland) and Tony Christie (Canterbury) were disappointed at missing selection in two New Zealand teams named after a national golf trial at Shirley last week-end, they were more than compensated yesterday. Cochrane and Christie were named along with Brent Paterson (Canterbury) and Steven Alker (Waikato) in the New Zealand team for the second Pacific amateur teams’ championship in Japan in October. The selectors have continued their policy of blending youth with experience. Christie, the New Zealand strokeplay champion, and Alker, the South Island and Canterbury champion, are both juniors; Paterson and Cochrane are both senior with considerable international experience. Paterson, Canterbury’s regular No. 1, was also chosen in the Asian-Pacific teams’ championship in Taiwan in September. Christie, who was fifth in the trial, will be representing New Zealand officially at senior level or the first time. Stadium shut down NZPA-Reuter Brussels The stadium of the Belgian first division soccer club, Antwerp, has been closed for safety reasons but the club hopes it will be in good order for the start of the new season next month. An Interior Ministry spokesman said yesterday that local authorities shut down the 66-year-old stadium, which can hold up to 68,000 people, after safety experts ruled spectators could be at risk because of its poor structural state. Chess finalists Last year’s runner-up, Linwood Intermediate School, will join the defending champion, Medbury School, Chisnallwood Intermediate School and Merrin School, in the final of "The Press” intermediate chess competition. Linwood completed the zone rounds yesterday with two 5-0 wins to finish unbeaten in its section. Medbury and Merrin also reached the final last year, but Kirkwood has lost its place to Chisnallwood. St Michael’s Church Day School broke through for its first win in the last round at Linwood Intermediate yesterday, beating Cathedral College, 3-2. The final, a round-robin among the four schools, will be held at Chisnallwood Intermediate on Monday afternoon. Final results of zone two at Linwood Intermediate School: — Round four.— Linwood A 5, Cathedral College 0; Manning 3, Christchurch South 2; Chisnallwood B 5, St Michael’s 0. Round five: St Michael’s 3. Cathedral College 2; Christchurch South 4, Chisnallwood B 1; Linwood A 5, Manning 0. Points.— Linwood A 5 (23i/ 2 ), Christchurch South 3 (15U), Chisnallwood B 2 (12), Cathedral College 2 (9), Manning 2 (9), St Michael’s 1 (6). Spinal unit benefits The spinal unit at Burwood Hospital will benefit from the Cantabrians Combined Secondary Schools rugby match against the Canterbury Under 18 tournament team at Rugby Park on Sunday afternoon. The curtain-raiser to the charity game will feature two Golden Oldies teams, the Golden Korus and the Rangiora Rebels. Ski race postponed The Kiwi Lager super-G ski race at Mount Hutt has been postponed a week because of technical difficulties. Originally scheduled for this Saturday, the high-speed event will now be held on Sunday, August 6, the day after the men’s F.I.S. series finishes. By then the overseas teams will have departed but a good field of New Zealand racers is expected.
