Hunt wins biathlon

A Queenstown identity, Geoff Hunt, won the inaugural Kiwi Lager mountain bike downhill biathlon at The Remarkables ski area, Queenstown, on Monday.

Hunt, well-known around Queenstown for his adventure sporting, sped down the I.4km super giant slalom ski course and Bkm mountain bike run in 9mln 425.

Almost a minute further back was Grant Burney, who covered the distance in lOmin 335. Shamus Butt was third.

Fourth among the 22 competitors was the first woman home, Christine Grant, of Queenstown. The former New Zealand Olympic ski-racer clocked an impressive time of lOmin 455. The ski-ing section of the race was from the top of the Shadow Basin at The Remarkables ski area. At the base area the competitiors switched footwear and pedalled at alarming speeds down the upper half of the ski area access road.

The race organiser, Ross Lee, described the first biathalon (part of the Winter Festival celebrations) held at the ski area as a great success. There were no major injuries although on the biking stage some competitors received a few bruises and scrapes.

One competitor was unable to finish the course when his bike was damaged in a fall on a tight corner.
