Southland wins

PA Paeroa Southland forwards came through the quagmire much better than their Thames Valley counterparts and paved the way for their side’s 17-6 victory at Paeroa yesterday. The game, played in atrocious conditions, cold wind and rain and plenty of mud, opened the national second division championship campaigns for both teams. Thames Valley had first use of the elements and took the

game to the visitors who were a little slow in finding their feet. After 30 minutes Valley’s Glen Dalgety landed two penalties, but the Southland forwards started to get back into the game and from one good driving rush put the wing, Phil Johnson, over for a try to make the half-time score 6-4 to Valley. Scorers: Southland 17 (P. Johnson, B. Youle tries; E. Crossnan 3 penalty goals) Thames. Valley 6 (G. Dalgety 2 penalty goals).
