Women play brass

Edwina Thorn is a New Zealand jazz musician who has been blowing her own trumpet in the uncompromising world of the professional jazz musician.

She has become a familiar face and sound on the international jazz circuit. Together with Janet Roddick of Wellington’s Six Volts and Frances Krsinich of Christchurch’s One Leg Too Short, she will be playing in a two-con-cert series at the Christchurch Arts Centre on July 28 and 29.

Janet Roddick and Six Volts will play on July 29 at 8 p.m. Frances Krsinich will appear with One Leg Too Short at 1.10 p.m. on July 28. Each group has its own unique character but there are some similarities — apart from the women playing brass — in their approach to music and the nature of the musicians.

Both groups favour innovative and original content and if they enjoy using established techniques and recognised material it is often in a new way and sometimes with tongue in cheek. Humour is a feature both groups include in their pieces.
