’Copter tragedy A Soviet military helicopter crashed on to a car near Vladivostok in the Soviet Far East, killing five members of the crew and four people in the car. The crash happened as the helicopter was flying over a road on the outskirts of the Primorye maritime centre. The cause of the crash was unknown. —NZPA Kidnap charge An Italian couple who chained their 15-year-old son to a chest of drawers because they disapproved of the company he kept have been arrested on kidnapping charges. The police in the small town of Rossano, southern Italy, said that Giuseppe Urso, aged 39, and Achiropita Mascaro, aged 40, disapproved of their son Vicenzo’s friends and wanted to prevent him leaving the house.—NZPA Lap of honour? A prisoner, Peter Overy, allowed out of jail for a few hours to compete in a charity race in southern England, burst through the winning tape — and kept on running. A police spokesman said Overy, aged 46, serving a three-year sentence for theft in Sussex, was still free — “Perhaps he’s doing a lap of honour, maybe round the world.”—NZPA Anorexia problem Anorexia nervosa sufferers are more likely than “normal” eaters to shoplift and steal, according to an American study reported in the latest “Medical Observer” magazine in Sydney. The University of Michigan study of more than 180 people with eating disorders found nearly 30 per cent reported that they stole.—NZPA
