Cuts 'forced Govt’ to stop police campaign

Political reporter The Government was forced to can a i $425,000 police recruitment campaign it had already paid for because of cuts to i police numbers, the Opposition spokesman on employment and Maori affairs, i Mr Winston Peters, said yesterday. The Minister of Police, Mr Tapsell, i denied the allegation, saying the campaign could be reused. I In answer to a parliamentary question i from Mr Peters, Mr Tapsell revealed that a crime prevention/recruitment/ 1 public relations television campaign had i

been completed in April. It had been two years in development and had cost $425,200.03. “This campaign has been deferred in the meantime,” said Mr Tapsell. In its place, part of a $1.5 million campaign by another advertising agency promoting awareness of community policing was to be run. Mr Peters said the original campaign had been “jettisoned” because of last month’s police cuts. Mr Tapsell said the two campaigns would have clashed, so the recruitment campaign was deferred.
