Illegal mine dismantled

Wellington reporter An illegal mining scheme at Totara River just north of Ross on the West Coast, has been dismantled by the Ministry of Energy. A complaint was made on July 16 by an applicant seeking a mining licence for the area. ■ 7 '' The senior field officer at. the Ministry’s Greymouth office, Mf Alan Tinnelly, visited the area with Mr Mark Pizey, a mining inspector. _____

The Ministry is considering prosecution under section 41 of the Mining Act. “I have been most disturbed by the illegal mining being carried out in the South Island,” said the Ministry’s group manager for mining inspection, Mr George Munro.
