Rent review promised

The Government will review its policy of charging teachers a market rent for their houses. After consultations with the New Zealand Educational Institute and the Post-Primary Teachers’ Association, the Government had decided to set up an inter-departmental review group, the Minister of Education, Mr Lange, said yesterday. The group will be chaired by Dr Anne Meade of the Prime Minister’s department, and will include repre-

sentatives from the State Services Commission, Justice Department, Housing Corporation, Treasury and the Education Department. “All these departments play a part in implementing the Government’s policy of introducing market rentals for teacher houses,” said Mr Lange. He said the issues must be looked at regionally. Some regions had particular staffing problems that needed to be looked at as part of a package larger than housing alone.
