Van burns, two die

PA Hamilton Two people were burned to death when the van they were travelling in exploded after a collision at Rangiriri, 50km north of Hamilton, last evening. A car and a van collided at the Rangiriri turn-off on State highway 1 at 7 p.m., causing the van to explode.

One man, whose clothing was on fire, escaped from the van and ran down into the Waikato River. The man and a woman, whom ambulance officers described as "hysterical,” were taken to Waikato Hospital. The driver of the car escaped with minor injuries.
