Gin’s Venture may provide reason to celebrate at Levin

Wellington correspondent

Foxton colt, Gin’s Venture, looks to have an excellent chance of securing first money in this afternoon’s $40,000 Ashford Park Stud Ryder Stakes (1200 m at the Levin Racing Club’s meeting at Levin. The race is the last juvenile feature of the season and it is unusual for it has never yet been won by a filly. In fact all but one of the contests have been won by colts. The exception was Black Rod (1972) a gelding trained at Otaki. While Central Districts horses have won two of the last three Ryders, the race has been nominated by colts north of Lake Taupo. Two years ago Weston Lea won. Add to that the success in recent times of Beechcraft, Red Tempo and Altitude confirms that the event is always in keen demand. The 1989 running will be no different. Mystic Sovereign, Cicatrix, Triple Crossing and Kellett are the northern hope-

fuls, but this time the lower half of the North Island might dominate the race. Gin’s Venture is trained by the father and son combination of Garth and Craig Ivil. He has had two races for two wins. The first was at Tauherenikau when he won by si/ 2 lengths. Then on a heavy track last month he beat Mystic Sovereign narrowly in the lades Futurity at Te Rapa. Mystic Sovereign since then has gone on to record two wins and a third. While Gin’s Venture will be racing for just the third time, Mystic Sovereign will be having his twenty-fourth career start. Two years ago the Ivils broke a string of northern wins when Arctic Wolf was successful. David Walsh was the rider on that occasion and he has the mount today. Cicatrix has a first and second from two outings and so does Triple Crossing. Tony Allan, who rides Cicatrix, is a Levin old boy, who won the Ryder on Weston Lea. David Peake makes one of

his now rare sorties into the area to ride Triple Crossing. Peake was the rider when Triple Crossing won last time at Hastings at the start of the month. Mystic Sovereign, Cicatrix and Triple Crossing are all colts.

The filly, Kellett, will be ridden by Bruce Compton, and is a sound prospect, which may set the record straight. She won at Rotorua and was second last time at Matamata, beaten by seven lengths by Mystic Sovereign. Alpha Centauri is now back in the field. He trekked to Riccarton earlier in the month and his debut run brought a six-length win. Grant Davison has been booked for the ride. Wise Counsel and Laddie Boy, both with three wins have shown good form this season. Wise Counsel has had two races in this campaign and is expected to show up strongly. There was also much to admire in the solid success of Finnegan Fox, which won the Woburn Handicap at Trentham by just under four lengths on

the opening day of the recent winter carnival. While geldings have a battle to win the race, Castletown, with two wins from four races, and Raisem Red, four wins from 12 starts, have claims. The conditions of the Ryder should suit Raisem Red. He failed at Awapuni with 59.5 kg and then was second in the Woburn with 58.5 kg. But the conditions of the Ryder mean that he will carry only 55kg. Shearkhan, from Te Awamutu, will be attempting to win his second Levin Winter Cup in succession when he tackles the $lB,OOO 1600 m event. He faces opposition from Rongonui, the winner a year ago of the Whyte Handicap and the C.J.C. Winter Cup. Rongonui will race in blinkers. An even field includes a Trentham winner, Charvet, the capable Westgate and Dad’s Gift, which returned a big effort to get third in the Wayne Wilkinson at Trentham earlier in the. month.
