Sled dog dies

A sled dog from the international trans-Antarctica expedition died of apparent heat stroke in Havana after the air conditioning failed on the expedition’s Soviet airplane. The remaining 41 dogs were healthy and cool after being taken to a Havana zoo, where they were being watered and kept in a shaded compound overnight. "It’s not a good way of starting,” said the expedition leader, American Will Steger. “It’s the worst thing that could happen outside of losing a person. It’s a shame for the dog, and it’s a shame for the expedition.” Steger and an international team of explorers plan to begin a seven-month trip across Antarctica on August 1. Their trek would be the first unmechanised crossing of the continent.—NZPA-KRD.
