Peters, McLean clash on forests
By
BRENDON BURNS
The National Party spokesmen, Messrs Winston Peters and lan McLean, are at loggerheads over State lumber assets. Mr Peters tossed the first caber yesterday, saying he was opposed to the sale of milling rights or the lease of forest land owned by the Crown. He criticised the Government’s plans to sell the assets, saying they belonged to all New Zealanders.
"At the end of the day I believe it is wrong. It’s a national heritage,” National Party policy was to sell State assets only where the private sector could use them more efficiently, he said. This had not been proven in the case of State forests.
Mr McLean said his colleague was quite wrong.
A National Party position paper, approved by the caucus and the party, had made quite clear that State forests, land and milling rights would be sold.
